Iberostar
From 1999 till 2001 I worked for Iberostar, a Spanish hotel chain. I was part of the entertainment team. During the day we did activities with the guests like: pistol shooting, waterpolo, archery, volleyball, petanque, bingo, etc. We also had a mini club and a teeny club. In the evenings we had an one hour show like: Grease, Saturday Night Fever, Cats, Alegria, Riverdance, Starlight Express, Lion King, Variety, etc. My main job was during the day to set up the stage and prepare all the technical stuff. At night I joined the shows and (as we had the technical boards backstage) I also did the lights and sound when I was not on stage.
I started out in Mallorca, in Cala Millor. I came towards the end of the season and I learned everything on the spot. After 5 weeks I got offered to go to Fuerteventura on the Canary Islands. I stayed there for a couple of weeks before I was send to Lanzarote (also on the Canary Islands) to help out there. As I enjoyed it much better there, I stayed. I worked there for more than a year. We worked six days a week.
A normal day looked like this:
10:00 - 13:00 Set up the set
13:00 - 13:30 Lunch
13:30 - 15:00 Rehearsal
15:00 - 17:00 Continue set up and preparations
17:00 - 19:45 Break
19:45 - 20:30 Dinner
20:30 - 21:30 Children's disco and medals ceremony
21:30 - 22:30 Showtime
22:30 - 00:00 Strike and clean up
In December of 2000 I left Lanzarote and went to the Netherlands for several months, before going to the yearly course (my first one though) on Mallorca.
That last year I joined the flying team. We were a team of 9 people and had 7 hotels to take care of. We worked out of our warehouse called the "Almacen". Those 7 hotels shared the same sets and show costumes that we delivered. The 4 guys of the team did all the set-ups and the girls prepared all the costumes. We had shows in several hotels a day and we all did our own set-ups. I can remember that I even did set-ups in different hotels on the same day! We also joined in the shows. I had 6 shows a week!
It was a hard working life, but so much fun. Working in lovely weather, with fun colleagues from many different countries and for guests that were (mostly) relaxed and fun. I met some great people over the years.
